Friday Telehealth Tip: Long forms = lost patients

Last week I talked about making it easy for patients to find you and book appointments. Remember, "A frictionless patient access system doesn’t persuade patients—it removes the barriers that stop them from getting care."

But here's the thing—getting them to click "book" is only half the battle.

What happens between booking and showing up matters just as much.

If your intake process feels like a homework assignment, patients will abandon it. Believe me, I know, I used to be a middle school teacher if you can believe it! They haven't built trust with you yet. A 20-question form asking for their life history before they've even met you? That's a lot to ask.

Here's what works:

Keep intake short—just what you need to prepare for the visit. Save the deeper questions for after the appointment is secured, when they're already committed to working with you.

Use plain language. If your forms read like legal documents, patients will put them off (or give up entirely).

Make it mobile-friendly. Most patients will complete intake on their phone, probably while waiting in line somewhere. If they can't save their progress and come back later, you'll lose them.

The bottom line: Intake should prepare care, not create friction. Collect only what's needed to start. Everything else can wait.


This week's challenge: Pull up your intake process on your phone. Time yourself completing it. If it takes more than 5 minutes, it's probably costing you patients.
